Dr. Murphy graduated with honors from The University of Michigan College of Engineering in May 1988. He received a Bachelor of Science in Engineering in Chemical Engineering (BSE ChE) degree. He received numerous academic awards, honors and scholarships while at The University of Michigan.
While he enjoyed the challenges and rewards of a career in engineering, Dr. Murphy decided to pursue his dream of becoming an orthodontist. In 1992 he decided to return to school at The University of Michigan College of Dentistry. He received his Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) degree in May 1996. Dr. Murphy served as a class officer for all four years of dental school. He was honored with many dental awards, including being awarded a scholarship for his final year of dental school (awarded to the top two dental students in the senior class).
Dr. Murphy went directly from dental school to his orthodontic residency at The University of Washington in Seattle, Washington, widely regarded as one of the top orthodontic residency programs in the world. He completed that program in June 1998, receiving both a Certificate in Orthodontics and a Master of Science in Dentistry (MSD) degree. He completed a research project investigating the stability of orthognathic (jaw) surgery in adolescent patients.
Following graduation, Dr. Murphy associated with a very well respected orthodontist in Grand Rapids, MI. After one year as an associate, he discovered a practice that had become available in Willoughby. He purchased the practice of Dr. Donald Peppercorn in 1999. He moved the office to a new, more spacious location in Mentor in 2013.
Dr. Murphy and his family live in Concord, OH. When away from the office he enjoys spending time with his wife, their two children, and their three rescue dogs. He also enjoys reading legal thrillers, mysteries, and military fiction. He and his family enjoy travelling to visit family in other parts of the country, especially warmer climates in the winter months.
Each year, Dr. Murphy completes a significant number of hours of continuing dental education, including both at local and national meetings. Dr. Murphy is board eligible for certification as a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontists. He is also a member of the following dental and orthodontic groups:
